Light is both the most important and most difficult part to capture and employ as a photographer. Whether it’s catching a rare subtle ray of light when you’re shooting in the Northern hemisphere, photographing a sunset, or using available light for an indoor shoot, manipulating and capturing it can keep you up all night in reality, but wonders for your vision. The photography discusses how the use of light can change their photographs to give a personal interpretation and feel different moods.
Let's see how light should be used as the biggest advantage for a photographer.
Tip #1 - Importance of Light in Photography
Light is the most important element of photography. It can create a mood or add drama to a scene. Photographers need to understand how light interacts with their surroundings, the camera, and the lens. They should also know how different light can affect the appearance of an image and how to use it creatively. Light can create different moods and feelings in a photograph. For example, when photographing a scene where there is no natural light, photographers will use available light (such as sun or artificial lighting), strobes such as speedlights or continuous lights, studio lights, or reflectors. A photographer's knowledge of how different light affects their image is essential for creating images with dramatic effects. Light can also create an artistic effect by adding color. The photographer will choose the color of light by choosing their filter. They will also sometimes use colored gels or diffusers to affect the quality of light. Photographers need to understand how different light interact with their surroundings and what it adds or takes away from a scene. This includes understanding how natural lighting affects color, contrast, and saturation.
Tip #2 - Make Use of The Golden Hour
Golden Hour is the hour before sunset and after sunrise. It is a great time to take beautiful pictures. Golden Hour photography has been around for centuries, but it has only become popular in the past few decades with digital cameras and smartphones. .The golden hour is best used for landscape photography and can be further split into two: the warm golden hour and the cool golden hour. The warm golden hour is when the sun is closest to the horizon which makes light flat. This type of light has a lot of contrast between shadows and highlights, making it more dramatic. The cool golden hour happens when the sun has just set or has already gone down, which gives a more soft light that is less harsh than warm gold. The best time to shoot during the golden hour is when the sun is at a 30-degree angle. By shooting at this time, you can capture that soft light that makes landscapes pop. The time of day when the sun is directly overhead is called “high noon.” This is the worst time to shoot because it creates harsh shadows and makes landscapes look flat. You want to avoid shooting during midday because it can create unflattering photos that don’t show off your subject in its best light.
"What makes photography a strange invention is that its primary raw materials are light and time." – John Berger
Tip #3 - What you should not do?
The most important thing you should not do while choosing the best light environment for photography is judging the quality of the light based on what it looks like outside. In other words, you don’t have to wait until the sun goes down or there’s a storm before you can take some great pictures. You may be surprised by how much better your photos turn out when you try shooting indoors or at night. The right type of light can make all the difference in your pictures. If you’re not sure what kind of lighting you should use, ask yourself: does it look natural? Does it highlight the subject in a flattering way? Does it feel like you could see this image with your own eyes? If so, then you have the right kind of light for your photo. The best light environment for photography is one that looks good, but not too good. You want there to be some contrast so that your subject stands out from the background or surroundings, but you don’t want it to be too dramatic. If you have the choice of shooting outdoors or indoors, outdoor light is usually better than indoor light. This is because outdoor light comes from the sun, which provides consistent exposure across all times of day and year. Indoors, however, lighting can vary depending on how many windows are in your room. If you’re shooting a portrait in a basement with no natural light (and therefore no windows), then it will look darker than if you were shooting at the same time outside where there is plenty of sunlight streaming through windows. When shooting outdoors, try to find a location that has a mix of different types of light. For example, you want some sunlight but also some shade for contrast. You don’t want your subject standing in direct sunlight because it will overexpose their face and make it look unnatural.
Is it really necessary?
In modern cameras, light is one of the most critical factors to great photography. No light means your lens isn't going to show you what it's seeing and without light, you can't take a photo.
Let’s have a look at some examples of why light is necessary for photography! Light is necessary to capture an image. Without light, you cannot see what is in front of you and therefore cannot take a photo. Light helps create depth and dimension in your images. It also helps show off the color of objects, making them more vibrant and interesting to look at. Light is necessary to capture an image.
